Traversing alpine meadows and forested highlands beneath sacred Himalayan peaks, this journey connects the remote landscapes of western Bhutan with its cultural heartlands.
Beginning in Paro Valley and crossing the dramatic Chelela Pass, Bhutan’s highest motorable pass, the route reveals panoramic views of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake before descending into traditional villages and secluded campsites. The journey concludes with cultural exploration in Thimphu, Punakha and Paro, offering insight into Bhutan’s living Buddhist traditions and the philosophy of Gross National Happiness.
Example Itinerary
10-Day Chelela Highland Trek
This itinerary is presented as an example journey. All treks are fully bespoke and can be adapted in duration, pace, trekking difficulty and accommodation style.
Day 1
Arrive at Paro International Airport, enjoying one of the world’s most dramatic Himalayan landings. After a warm welcome, transfer to your hotel and settle into the tranquil Paro Valley. Later, explore Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong) and visit the National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong) for an introduction to Bhutan’s history, art and spiritual heritage.

Day 2
Hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery, dramatically perched on a cliff above Paro Valley. One of Bhutan’s most sacred sites, the journey offers both spiritual significance and unforgettable views. In the afternoon, return to Paro for a relaxed stroll through local markets.

Day 3
Begin the trekking journey, leaving Paro behind and ascending into more remote terrain. The trail passes through forested slopes, river valleys and traditional villages, offering early immersion into Bhutan’s rural landscapes.

Overnight: Campsite, Chonana
Day 4
A steady climb through alpine meadows and high-altitude pastures. As elevation increases, expansive mountain views unfold across the surrounding valleys.
Approx. 16 km | 6–7 hours
Overnight: Campsite, Jebkarpo
Day 5
Traverse highland trails with sweeping views of Mount Jomolhari, Jichu Drake and neighbouring peaks. The landscape alternates between open meadows and rocky ridgelines.
Approx. 16 km | 5–6 hours
Overnight: Campsite, Milunga
Day 6
Descend gradually into greener terrain, passing through alpine forests and valleys where yaks graze. The changing environment reflects Bhutan’s remarkable ecological diversity.

Overnight: Campsite, Tong
Day 7
Conclude the trekking section and drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. The transition from remote highlands to the cultural centre highlights Bhutan’s unique balance between tradition and modern governance.

Choice of city hotels, boutique properties or luxury lodges.
Day 8
Visit Tashichho Dzong, then cross Dochula Pass, renowned for its 108 chortens and panoramic Himalayan views. Continue to Wangdue Phodrang and Punakha region.
Overnight: Wangdue Phodrang / Punakha
Day 9
Walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the revered Fertility Temple, before visiting Punakha Dzong, dramatically located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Continue to Paro.
Overnight: Paro
Day 10
Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure, leaving Bhutan with lasting impressions of its landscapes, spirituality and philosophy of Gross National Happiness.
