Day 1
Your Bhutan journey begins with one of the most unforgettable flights in the world. As you approach Paro, the mountain views unfold in dramatic fashion, with famous Himalayan peaks visible on a clear day. The landing itself is considered one of the most thrilling aviation experiences anywhere.
On arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be welcomed and driven to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, in around one hour. After lunch, the sightseeing begins.
Today’s experiences include:
National Memorial Chorten
Built in memory of the Third King of Bhutan, this revered stupa is dedicated to world peace. It is one of the best places to witness everyday Bhutanese spiritual life, with locals circling the monument and spinning prayer wheels.
General Post Office
A charming stop where visitors can browse Bhutan’s distinctive stamps, postcards and local keepsakes. Bhutanese stamps are especially well known for their artistic themes and cultural motifs.
Craft Bazaar
In the evening, stroll through Thimphu’s lively handicraft market. This is a lovely introduction to Bhutanese creativity, with stalls often featuring jewellery, textiles, paintings, pottery, candles, home décor and handmade gifts.
Overnight: Thimphu
Day 2
After breakfast, continue exploring Thimphu before returning to Paro. This day blends panoramic viewpoints, Buddhist culture and historic architecture.
Morning in Thimphu
Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point)
Located above the valley, this giant Buddha statue is one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks. Construction began in 2006 and was completed in 2015. The site offers sweeping views over Thimphu and a peaceful temple complex to explore.
Zilukha Nunnery
Set on a hillside, this nunnery offers calm surroundings and beautiful views across the valley. It is home to a community of nuns devoted to prayer, meditation and the study of Buddhist texts.
Afternoon in Paro
After lunch in Thimphu, drive back to Paro and continue with cultural sightseeing:
Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong)
A striking fortress-monastery overlooking the Paro Valley, known for its beautiful Bhutanese architecture, intricate woodwork and historic importance.
National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong)
Located above the dzong, the museum houses a fascinating collection of Bhutanese art, relics, thangkas and historical artefacts, while also offering wide views over the valley.
Overnight: Paro
Day 3
This is the signature day of the tour.
After breakfast, begin the hike to Taktshang Monastery, better known as Tiger’s Nest. Perched dramatically on a cliff at around 3,120 metres (10,240 feet) above sea level, it is one of Bhutan’s holiest sites and a defining image of the country.
According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava flew here from Tibet on the back of a tigress and meditated at the site, helping establish Buddhism in Bhutan. Today, Tiger’s Nest remains both a place of pilgrimage and an extraordinary architectural landmark.
What to expect
Approximate hiking time: 5 hours round trip
