Visa and Entry Requirements

All international visitors to Bhutan require a visa arranged in advance through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. The visa is issued electronically prior to arrival and is required to board your flight. This system supports Bhutan’s approach to sustainable, well-managed tourism.

Entering Bhutan requires advance planning, as the country maintains a carefully regulated tourism system designed to protect its culture, environment and way of life. Unlike most destinations, Bhutan does not offer visas on arrival for the majority of travellers. All entry arrangements must be organised in advance through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator.

Bhutan Visa Policy Explained

All international travellers, with the exception of Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian passport holders, are required to obtain a Bhutan visa prior to arrival. The visa is issued electronically and is mandatory for boarding flights to Bhutan. Independent travel is not permitted; visas can only be processed through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator who submits the application on the traveller’s behalf.

Once approved, travellers receive a visa clearance letter, which must be presented at check-in and upon arrival in Bhutan. The visa itself is stamped into the passport at Paro International Airport.

Role of Licensed Bhutanese Tour Operators

Bhutan’s visa system is closely linked to its tourism framework. Licensed operators are authorised to manage visa applications, travel permits and itinerary approvals. This ensures that all visitors comply with national regulations and that travel remains sustainable and well-managed.

Working with an experienced operator such as My Asia Tours simplifies the process significantly. The operator coordinates visa submission, monitors approval timelines and ensures that documentation aligns with the confirmed itinerary. This integrated approach reduces administrative burden and provides reassurance throughout the planning stage.

Required Documents for Visa Application

To apply for a Bhutan visa, travellers are generally required to provide a valid passport with at least six months’ validity from the date of travel, along with passport details and personal information. Additional documentation may be required depending on nationality and travel plans. All requirements are communicated clearly by the tour operator prior to submission.

Visa processing times can vary, so applications should be submitted well in advance of the intended travel date, particularly during peak travel seasons or festival periods.

Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

As part of its commitment to responsible tourism, Bhutan applies a Sustainable Development Fee to international visitors. This fee contributes directly to education, healthcare, environmental conservation and cultural preservation across the country. The SDF is integrated into the overall travel arrangement and reflects Bhutan’s high-value, low-impact tourism model.

Entry and Immigration on Arrival

All international arrivals enter Bhutan via Paro International Airport. Immigration procedures are straightforward, with officials verifying visa clearance and travel documentation. Travellers are welcomed formally and transferred directly into their pre-arranged itinerary.

A Thoughtful Approach to Entry

Bhutan’s visa and entry requirements may appear more structured than those of other destinations, but they are central to preserving what makes the Kingdom unique. By managing entry carefully, Bhutan ensures that travel remains respectful, meaningful and beneficial to both visitors and local communities—setting the tone for a journey defined by intention rather than volume.
